At RDFO, we’re suckers for emerging singer-songwriters in the pop realm, and newcomer somegirlnamedanna is already showing the telltale signs of a rising star in her field. Signed just last year to Lava Records by famed music exec, Jason Flom himself, somegirlnamedanna has received a warm reception from pop fans and music press alike, including the New York Times. Her March debut, “hello i am” is already clocking in at a quarter of a million streams and a coveted spot on Spotify’s “New Music Friday” playlist.
somegirlnamedanna is in fact, not just some girl at all. It’s clear Anna was a budding songwriter in the making right from the start. Anna spent much of her childhood in rural Minnesota honing her craft – learning music by ear on the piano from the radio and growing up on classics like Joni Mitchell and Tracy Chapman.
Her latest release, “kitchen table” brings us back to those all important formative years. Using the kitchen table as a metaphor for connection and the warmth of family, the track is a sweetly sung bop about those comforting childhood memories.
Speaking of the inspiration behind the song, Anna says: “The kitchen table growing up is where so many important moments happened—talking with my family about anything from how my day was to some of the most defining moments of my life. The sense of connection and support I needed all happened when we were sitting there together. For me, that kitchen table reminds me of the people I love and where I came from, and it holds so many memories that I look back on.”
The stripped back sonic backdrop allows Anna’s Lorde-esque vocals to shine. Much like Lorde, Anna has that special quality of having depth to her singing style – the kind that can be both powerful and delicate at the same time. I’m excited to see what’s next from this talented artist.
