On March 13th, the Taiwan Beats Showcase lit up Venue 6(The Venue ATX) in Austin with a genre-blurring lineup featuring Flesh Juicer, Sorry Youth, Pei-Yu Hung, Our Shame, Modern Cinema Master and someshiit. Moving from raw intensity to experimental edges, the night delivered a bold statement of Taiwan’s evolving musical identity: iconically timely, fiercely original, and impossible to overlook.

Organized by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture, the festivities kicked off with the Taiwan Beats Day Party, a strategic blend of artist pitching and cross-Asian networking. Complemented by authentic Taiwanese street food, the event evolved into a multi-sensory cultural experience that drew a steady stream of attendees from afternoon well into the night.
The showcase opened with someshiit, backed by a full band and DJ, energizing the crowd with fan favorites and announcing an upcoming EP, THOSE. Our Shame followed with a full-band set from their latest release, Hidden Album, blending electronic and folk textures. The duo described performing in Austin as both exciting and meaningful, “like being athletes on a national team.” Modern Cinema Master kept the momentum with a relentless, high-energy set rooted in ’90s-inspired noise, post-punk and lo-fi sounds, igniting the room.

One of the night’s most anticipated acts, Flesh Juicer drew a massive crowd, with pits moving throughout their set. Their presence extended beyond the showcase, including an appearance at ACADEMY FIGHT SONGS x HOTEL VEGAS, while SXSW’s On the Spotlight series praised them as “a band you won’t forget.” Pei-Yu Hung, making her U.S. debut, delivered an emotional set from her latest album Still Moving, noting that the experience reinforced her belief that music can take her anywhere.
Closing the night, Sorry Youth returned to SXSW for the second time, delivering a powerful finale that underscored their growing international presence. The band performed “Pilgrimage,” the same track featured in their 2022 online SXSW session, creating a sense of continuity across years and formats. They also announced an upcoming single, “Outta My Way”. Addressing the crowd, Sorry Youth reflected on SXSW’s global spirit, emphasizing unity through diversity and the shared passion for music that transcends cultural and geographic boundaries.
