JAM OF THE WEEK: Ruby Francis – Rush (Initial Talk Remix)

Fast-rising London artist Ruby Francis has been nearly unstoppable since she first came onto the scene.  Having released a number of critically-acclaimed projects and singles, Ruby is on pace to become one of the hottest artists in the UK – and BBC Radio seems to agree.  Finding support from DJ Targett, Ace, Twin B & Jamz Supernova on 1xtra, while Tom Robinson on 6Music & Jamie Cullum on Radio 2 also keep her records in rotation – Ruby Francis has no shortage of tastemakers riding her wave.

While 2018 has already been a great year for Ruby Francis, she seems to be showing no sign of letting up heading into the winter.  Most recently she has unleashed her latest single, “Rush”, which has already seen praise from the likes of Earmilk and Line of Best Fit – and rightfully so.  While the original may have been a jam on its own…what brings us here today is the Initial Talk Remix that landed in my inbox last week.

To keep it totally transparent – I hadn’t yet heard of Ruby Francis before this landed in my lap.  With no built in preconceptions or bias, I hit play – and it has pretty much been on repeat since.  With Ruby’s signature, saucy, deliberate vocals sitting front and center, Initial Talk builds an absolutely tune.  In 3 minutes and 48 seconds, they somehow bring back everything that was great about Classic R&B and mix it with the crisp production techniques of the future.  Ridiculously funky basslines blend with glassy keys, harmonic background vocals, epic hits and fire drum programming to create a totally danceable, sexy, two-steppin’, nostalgic groove.

To say this is my jam would be an understatement.  Between Ruby Francis and Initial Talk, they are able to craft a timeless tune that can work for years to come.  I may have not known who Ruby Francis was two weeks ago, but it is clear she is on to something here – and I will be paying close attention.
