JAM(s) OF THE WEEK: SG Lewis – Better [VIDEO] + Hurting

Songwriter, producer and musician SG Lewis Has been making some major moves as of late.  After an incredible run of dates across Europe, America, Australia and Asia so far this year, SG also recently announced a landmark headline show at London’s iconic super club Printworks on December 7th. In addition he will return to the US for a full tour starting in September making stops at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere on September 28th & 29th and LA’s The Fonda Theater on October 19th.

Earlier this year, SG Lewis began to unleash music from his highly anticipated 3-part album, “Dusk, Dark, Dawn”, with each part delivering a different sound and each representing one part of one night out in club music and is a loving tribute to club and youth culture.  To build anticipation for the next phase as well as his upcoming tour, SG Lewis has recently unveiled two new tracks.

On standalone single, “Better”, he teams up with rising US songstress Clairo to bring a funky, disco-esque vibe to the track.  Always one to impress through his lush arrangements, sick sound design and undeniable groove, the new tune is a bubbly summertime jam.  With Clairo delivering a dreamy, 90’s inspired vocal, SG allows the track to breathe and interplay perfectly with the vocals. About the release he says, “I played Clairo the instrumental and she jumped on it straight away! The process was so natural, I kept the beat unquantized from the jam as I felt like it gave the record an old disco feel.”  Clairo also adds, “Sam is one of the most talented producers I know. We met the same day that we made this song, and just clicked instantly. “Better” is one of the first real steps I’ve made into ‘pop music’ and this collab feels like a match made in heaven!

Delivered along with an official video that sees the duo in Chicago rocking full length track suits, they take the fun, care-free vibe from the tune and translate it perfectly into the visuals thanks to stellar production from Weird Life Films (Ravyn Lenae, Soccer Mommy).

Once again proving SG Lewis ain’t nothin’ to fuck with… before I even had a chance to share this joint – he hit me with another… this time featuring one of my personal favorite vocalists Alunageorge.  The first release from, “Dark”, the second installment of his 3-part concept album, the new tune, “Hurting”, is exactly what I would want from this collaboration.

Discussing how the collab came to happen, SG offers, “Aluna and I met for the first time in LA earlier this year, and I was talking to her about the album concept, and in particular, Dark. Aluna has been a part of so many dance records that I love, so I knew I wanted to make a club track with her! After we ate burritos and hung out, we made “Hurting” super quickly – the whole process was super natural between the two of us, and she has such an amazing ear for production.

What is sure to be a club favorite through the end of the year and beyond, “Hurting”, is as sexy as it is groovy.  Muted keys meld with dreamy background melodies and driving basslines beneath Alunageorge’s ever impeccable vocals to create a spacey, dark, and chill af tune.  Far from the main stage destroyer, this one is built for the sweaty intimate shows where people are just as horny as they are drunk.  Super smooth yet totally turnt.  This is an all out JAM.

All I know is you better try to keep up with SG Lewis… and if you get the chance, you’re going to want to check him out live.  Peep the dates below.
