I’d be lying to you if I said that prior to 2016 I was listening to much else other than EDM and Hip Hop. While I grew up on Classic Rock (thanks mom), I kind of lost interest in the Rock scene pre-high school and a new love seemed far from plausible. Luckily for me, my blog, which started as a strictly EDM blog, put a crazy amount of new talent on my radar – and genre no longer became a deciding factor in whom I support. Thanks to a handful of talented up and coming bands, my Indie Rock Solid playlist is now one of my personal favs… Camens are one of those bands. Comprised of Scott Powell (Bass, lead vocals), Luke Brightmore (Drums, Backing Vocals), James Corbishley (Lead Guitar), and Josh Egan (Rhythm Guitar, Backing Vocals), Camens has been slowly gaining momentum since launching in 2017 – now its full steam ahead.
Based in the UK, more specifically Stoke-on-Trent, Camens first came onto my radar last year with the release of their single, “Redolence”. Instantly hooked by their solid production, Alt Pop vibes and quality songwriting, Camens quickly became a staple in my playlists – and I’m sure I have added quite substantially to their growing number of Spotify streams.
Since, “Redolence”, the group has been hard at work, dropping a string of singles and seemingly, finally garnering some major attention that they rightfully deserve. While still inexplicably flying under the radar (in my humble opinion) Camens are cranking out quality tunes that deserve a much wider audience. Their time is coming though. While their last single, “Danny DeVito”, may not yet be generating the massive amount of streams that artists these days base their success on, that didn’t stop BBC6 honcho Steve Lamacq from hopping on and supporting the record. A small victory, but a promising bit of support from their hometown.
Most recently, the 4-piece group has released, “Slept On the Sofa”, and it is an all out anthem. Powerful production couple with energetic vocals to create a memorable, jam worthy tune – another great addition to their growing catalog. Finding further support from BBC 6, their new tune was made BBC Introducing, “Record of the Week”, while also being shortlisted by Tom Robinson as, “Fresh of the Net”, their second single to do so.
When asked about the inspiration for the song, Camens comments, “This song is all about office and call centre work. About the cycle of 7am starts in the dark of winter, being inside all day and then coming out of work at 5 and it being dark again. Missing swathes of daylight, day after day. It’s about that loop that feels like your trapped, metaphorically and literally in that situation”.
While the tune may be a bit depressing beneath the surface, the group promises that there is hope hidden in between the lines, stating, “Do not believe the things you tell yourself when your sad and alone, keep going, even when its dark and life’s shit.”While there may be many bands around the world in the same lane as Camens, I’d be hard pressed to say that most of them do it as well. With a clear musicality hidden beneath clever lyrics and dynamic arrangements, Camens have yet to release a tune that doesn’t bring exactly what fans of the genre are looking for. It is only a matter of time before they catch on with the masses – and when they do, I’ll be happy to know I didn’t miss a beat.
