Dora Lachaise creates dark and otherworldly music from her attic overlooking Arnos Vale Cemetery in Bristol. Having released her debut single ‘Bone Collector’, she is back with her second single release. A guitar-based songwriter who has also fronted gothic metal bands in a past life, her recent tracks have shifted towards soundtrack ambiances and electronic avant-pop. For this latest release, Lachaise turns to some electronica influences such as Sevdaliza and FKA Twigs. Yet the music is a totally unique shade of dark electropop that we are glad we stumbled across.
‘I Confess’ is a haunting and brooding track featuring seamless production from Lachaise herself. A minimal percussion section interweaves with layers of ethereal synth and a mesmerising, warm lead vocal. Lachaise is a truly talented artist with touches of Kate Bush and hints of early Madonna. This track is full of tension and the synth textures build up so much suspense we are gripped from the start. Couple that with poetic words showcasing the lyrical ability of this artist, and that’s a winning combination. As for the meaning behind the song, the artist explains in her own words:
“Mary Magdalene’s story was used to pressure girls and women into behaving in a certain way;” she explains. “I wanted to lend my voice to Mary to defend herself, because even today, womxn are judged by outdated ideas.”
