There’s something truly invigorating about an artist who embarks on a musical journey, allowing their songs to evolve organically without the pressure of conforming to industry expectations. This independent spirit is beautifully embodied in DEEP DIVE, an indie-rock project hailing from Madison, Wisconsin, and led by the talented Cooper Allen Smith. By seamlessly blending the intimacy of bedroom recordings with the vibrant energy of guitar-driven indie rock, Smith has been diligently carving out a niche for himself through heartfelt songwriting, an expanding presence on stage, and a sound that feels deeply personal.

In recent years, DEEP DIVE has captured the attention of many curators within the indie music community, including support on Spotify’s “Feel Good Indie-Rock” playlist, and coverage from notable outlets such as BIRP.FM, Last Day Deaf, Unrecorded Magazine, while also earning a spot on alexrainbirdmusic’s indie and alternative compilation. Furthermore, Smith has taken the project on the road, performing over 30 shows across nine cities in 2025 alone. These achievements reflect an artist who recognizes that forging a lasting bond with listeners requires more than simply uploading music online and hoping for the best. With the release of his debut EP, Everything Always Happens, DEEP DIVE now has a golden opportunity to transform that momentum into something even more impactful.

Spanning eight songs and roughly 25 minutes, Everything Always Happens, serves as a succinct yet profound reminder of Smith’s songwriting and creative instincts. Crafted and self-produced within the familiar confines of his childhood home and college apartment, the EP radiates a warmth that comes from creating music on his own terms. While it possesses an appealing DIY aesthetic, the songs resonate as integral pieces of a larger personal narrative, skillfully balancing jangly guitars and rich instrumentation with lyrics that delve into themes of relationships, friendship, the trials of growing up, and the quest for self-understanding.

What truly makes this debut resonate is its remarkable ability to unearth relatable truths within experiences that often feel intensely personal. Young adulthood is rife with uncertain choices, evolving friendships, romantic entanglements, and moments when the future appears more ambiguous than anticipated. Supporting the projects lyrical themes, the projects production delivers more than enough melodic charm and instrumental dynamism to keep the listener engaged at every turn.

The opening track, “These Days”, introduces DEEP DIVE through washed out vocals, driving, upbeat production, and a slick arrangement that ebbs and flows between muted verses and anthemic hooks. Following this, “Stuck Up”, with its emo undertones, and “Running”, with its hypnotic groove and laid-back aura, help to establish the guitar-driven essence of the project as a whole, injecting a sense of forward momentum into a record that thoughtfully contemplates the more intricate aspects of everyday life. Track four, “Catching”, incorporates a bit of country twang while, “Take It Back” delves into a more mellow, psychadelic feel, helping to showcase DEEP DIVE's ability to pull inspiration from far and wide to create a completely cohesive and authentic final project.

“Anything Else”, the haziest of all of the tracks on the EP slows things down with emotive vocals, muted rhythms and bendy solo melodies, adding yet another layer to the projects evolving narrative while helping to sustain the project’s sense of progression as the record approaches its conclusion. Across these tracks, I find myself particularly struck by the delicate balance between the unpretentious nature of the production and the emotional heft of the writing. The music feels accessible, yet it brims with personality—a crucial distinction for an emerging artist aiming to leave listeners feeling as though they’ve stumbled upon a gem worth following, rather than simply encountering another set of familiar indie-rock sounds.

The EP’s focus track, “Call Me Up,” holds special significance in this introduction. Positioned thoughtfully late in the tracklist, it arrives after listeners have immersed themselves in the various moods and relationship dynamics that shape the record. Its title suggests a simple invitation to reconnect, yet such gestures can carry profound meaning, especially when relationships become complex or distance begins to seep in. Sometimes, the smallest act of reaching out can convey more than an elaborate explanation, and this idea resonates deeply within the emotional landscape Smith has crafted.

What I admire most about, “Call Me Up” is how it underscores the personal nature of DEEP DIVE’s songwriting. There’s no need for grand concepts or exaggerated emotional climaxes when the subject matter already speaks to experiences that many can relate to. The song serves as an apt focal point for a debut that revolves around connection, uncertainty, and the myriad ways people strive to remain integral parts of each other’s lives. Moreover, it provides the EP with a clear emphasis before the final track “Carried Away” gracefully concludes the journey.

Ultimately, Everything Always Happens triumphs because it understands the essential goals of a debut record. It introduces an artist’s unique perspective, establishes a recognizable musical identity, and offers listeners compelling reasons to return for another listen. Smith’s self-produced approach enhances the release’s authenticity, allowing the songs to retain a lived-in quality that aligns perfectly with their subject matter. While the EP is concise, it traverses enough emotional terrain to feel like a significant first statement rather than just a preliminary introduction.

For DEEP DIVE, this release marks an important milestone, uniting the songwriting and DIY ethos that have helped Smith cultivate an audience thus far. There’s ample room for the project to continue evolving, but that very potential adds to the enjoyment of this debut. Everything Always Happens doesn’t pretend to have all the answers; instead, it captures a tapestry of experiences, emotions, and realizations that accompany the journey of figuring things out as we go. It’s a sincere, melodic, and promising first record from an artist who seems at ease allowing the music to speak for itself, and I eagerly anticipate the path DEEP DIVE will take next.
